The Zambezi River | Tsowa Island Safari

Every year Marc and I start our new year with a wish list of trips in mind. We have been fortunate enough to travel across to many countries in the past. Although for most people, the past two years have made it difficult to travel, however, I feel that the world is certainly starting the return to normal. 2022 is the year that travelling, tourism and hospitality are back on the cards and that is why I have the next best luxury safari lodge recommendation for you to visit.

As you know, this blog is all about fashion, travel and lifestyle. Under the travel sections, you will see that I have experienced many safari lodges in South Africa., howver this was our first trip on a safari experience to Zimbabwe. If you have always dreamt of going on an African safari, or if you are like me, and absolutely love the bush, then Tswoa Safari Island in Zimbabwe is the lodge to visit. Secluded from the mainstream lodges of Victoria Falls, Tsowa Safari Island lodge is situated approximately 40km outside of Victoria Falls Town in the heart of the Zambezi National Park, on an actual island in the middle of the Zambezi River. Yes you read that right, an actual 1km long little island between Zimbabwe and Zambia. The National park nor the island is fenced and so you have to be careful of roaming wild animals, especially elephants on the island.

Marc and I were lucky enough to stay on the island for a couple of nights and my word, what an experience it was.

Tsowa Safari Island has 10 luxury tents on the island all with incredible views of the Zambezi River. The lodge offers a full board of meals with all beverages included and afternoon tea before you enjoy a sunset cruise.

In addition to all the eating on the island, Tsowa Safari Lodge offers a morning sunset cruise or a game drive in the national park, as well as an afternoon sunset cruise with drinks and delicious snacks. Trust me when I say the over indulging is worth it!

One of the highlights of staying at Tsowa Safari Island is that every day is personalized to your needs, wants and desires. The lodge manager and team curate the day around how you, as a guest, wish to spend it. You can choose to lounge by the infinity pool over looking the Zambezi River, you can sleep all day or you can relax in the open outdoor living room and read a book. The sound of nature is absolutely incredible at Tsowa Safari Islandand no words can really describe the peace that comes from no cellphone signal or technology around you. In my mind, a holiday like this is pure bliss and a great detox from reality.

The most memorable part of our stay at Tsowa Safari Island was when the lodge team arranged a 4-hour guided canoe and river rafting experience down the Zambezi River surrounded by hippos and crocodiles. We went down about 8 rapids, passed by a few pods of gigantic hippos and were able to swim in the rapids. Apparently the crocodiles and hippos do not enjoy that part of the water and so it was safe for us to swim in the rapids of the Zambezi River. After an adrenalin but well worth experience like that, I needed more than just one G&T. When we reached the end of our canoeing and river rafting trip, the team set up the most magnificent sundowner spot for us on the riverbank where we watched the sunset while enjoying many Gin and Tonics and reminisced about a once in a lifetime experience of canoeing down the Zambezi river. Honestly a memory I will never forget and I highly recommend doing !

All in all, Tsowa Safari Island, offers everything you are looking for. If you are looking for a luxury safari experience and you want to “switch off” from the rest of the world without any signal or technology then I could not recommend Tsowa Safari Island more. A romantic destination for people who appreciate the African bush!
